- An underground piston mass — typically exceeding 1 million tonnes in a commercial configuration (patent minimum: 100 tonnes) — is suspended within a hollow shaft for gravity-driven vertical movement to depths of 500m–1,000m, storing energy as gravitational potential energy in a sealed, water-filled system without surface reservoirs or dams.
- Unlike conventional PSH where head varies with reservoir water level, the GPP delivers constant hydraulic pressure derived from piston mass — enabling the pump-turbine to operate near best efficiency throughout the full generation and charging cycle.
- A single-shaft GPP requires approximately 5 acres. The multi-shaft plant depicted in this deck (4–5 shafts) covers approximately 20–25 acres to match the output of the pumped storage hydroelectric facility shown for comparison — versus the 5,000–12,000 acres a conventional PSH plant of equivalent capacity would require. Over 200× improvement in energy density enabling siting near load centers, grid interconnections, and renewable assets.
- No surface reservoirs, no dams, no rivers — GPP systems are installed in purpose-drilled underground shafts wherever geology is favorable, avoiding the environmental opposition and multi-decade permitting timelines that prevent conventional PSH from scaling.
- The GPP pump-turbine, motor-generator, and penstock are conventional mature hydroelectric components from the pumped-storage industry, eliminating technology risk and enabling procurement from existing global supply chains at independently validated cost.
