Overview
US Patent 11,906,396 B1 covers a system and method for determining aerodynamic drag C_d A and rolling resistance C_rr of vehicles using sensors embedded within mobile devices such as smartphones, vehicle computers, or bicycle computers. The patented method calculates resistive coefficients (C_d A and C_rr ) using speedometer, accelerometer and power measurements (force-based analysis) as well as elevation changes (work-energy analysis). The method also calculates power output given resistive coefficients. The error-prone measurement of grade angle is eliminated, the sensitive dependence of air density on elevation and temperature is accounted for, and the effect of wind speed and yaw angle can be included.
This approach transforms commonly available devices into portable aerodynamic testing/feedback systems. To demonstrate these methods, Laing has developed an iOS app.
